Boosting connectivity
at UK racecourses

RDT approached TrellisWorks to design and support a programme of upgrades to improve connectivity solutions for bookmakers across its sites including the historic Ascot Racecourse famous for its Royal meets.

Racecourse Data Technologies (RDT) was formed in 2004 and offers a range of hardware solutions to bookmakers at British horse racing sites. Supporting millions of racegoers at some of the UK’s most prestigious races the company is the leading supplier of on-course technologies. RDT was looking to update racecourse systems as they were becoming outdated.

Existing connectivity relied on congested Wi-Fi and public cellular networks. With up to 10,000 racegoers per event, latency spikes caused delays and downtime for betting systems. Stallholders faced constant reloads, and racecourses experienced frequent outages.

The Successes

  • Intelligent Connectivity

TrellisWorks designed and implemented a point to multipoint wireless solution which a created a stand alone network for bookmakers.

  • Saving Time

Latency reduced providing a speedier connection and more reliable service.

  • Return on Investment

Latency reduced providing a speedier connection and more reliable service.

  • Consistent Performance

The UK-wide racecourse solution was designed, ordered and completed ahead of schedule with no disruption to ongoing race meets.

Fast, reliable connection for every racecourse

Initially implemented at Cheltenham Racecourse, TrellisWorks worked with RDT to identify current weaknesses and design a new solution which could be rolled out across multiple sites.

Desktop based surveys and designs tested the technology with an initial proof of concept highlighting how the it could be implemented before the first deployment at Cheltenham.

Using point-to-multipoint wireless technology in the 60ghz frequency band, a dedicated stand-alone network for the bookmaker stands was deployed. This solution provided a private, fast, uncongested solution to eliminate congestion, latency and service interruption.

New distribution nodes were located across each site to ensure targeted coverage for the required areas and integration into the existing network.

Each stallholder was provided with a device to simplify the connectivity and set-up process so regardless of the race meet they attended they could automatically access a fast and reliable connection.

The new technology was rolled out across all UK sites with TrellisWorks providing ongoing support and guidance to guarantee the same level of performance at each meet. The solution has been so positively received TrellisWorks is now working with RDT to replicate the technology for other racecourse elements including public access points, point of sales and CCTV.

Key successes

  • Increase in revenue at racecourses as bookmakers invest in additional pitches due to network stability
  • Reduced workload for daily setups has seen an increase in productivity with added stability enabling ground staff to spend less time supporting network connectivity
  • UK- wide racecourse solutions designed, ordered and completed ahead of schedule causing no disruption to ongoing race meets
  • Improved service meant racecourses saw an increase in revenue with bookmakers choosing to invest in additional pitches due to network stability
  • Latency reduced providing a speedier connection and more reliable service
  • Downtime reduced to almost zero allowing for an increase in bets placed at each race
